Dr. Who jokes about Harry Potter Book 7
[Posted Friday, 06/29/07 2:49 pm] [Permalink]

Jeff writes in to tell us:

I just wanted to let you know that the second episode of Doctor Who's 3rd season, titled "The Shakespeare Code", has a couple of clever Harry Potter references.

The episode aired on CBC this past Monday here in Canada, but we're almost 3 weeks ahead of the States, so "The Shakespeare Code" should air Friday, July 13 on SciFi.

In one scene, after the Doctor's companion Martha Jones comments that recent goings-on are all "a little Harry Potter," the Doctor says, "Wait till you read Book Seven. Ohhh, I cried."

There's also another fun Harry Potter reference right near the end.

Third WOMBAT Test now online at J.K. Rowling official site
[Posted Wednesday, 06/13/07 6:42 pm] [Permalink]

Early this morning, fans noticed that the mysterious Do Not Disturb Sign was gone from the secret area on J.K. Rowling's official website, revealing a third and final WOMBAT test underneath. The test is more difficult than the previous two, and the test warns that certain answers could lose you marks.

The test covers Magical History, the bodies and laws of the International Wizarding Community, Magical Theory and Dark Magic. It will take 35 minutes to take.

Once again, the way to get into the room where the test is given is a puzzle. If you can't figure it out, drag your mouse over the blank area below (or type CTRL-A) to see the instructions.

Wait until the fly lands on the window; click him. He turns into a key. Drag him to the door and put it over the keyhole to open it, you'll see the desk. On the desk, put the circle on top of the line; it should sparkle. Then put the triangle on top (essentially creating the symbol on the spine of the British edition cover of Deathly Hallows). It should also sparkle. You can now take the test.

New cover and new excitement for Book 7

Scholastic editor Arthur Levine revealed the special edition cover of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on the Today show on NBC TV this morning. Arthur said this image is one of his favorite scenes in the book and he specifically asked that it be the image of the deluxe cover.

The new image shows our heroes, Harry, Hermione and Ron, riding a flying dragon!

I don't know about you, but I've been slightly depressed thinking about the coming of the end of Harry Potter, and the serious and even dire book covers previously released didn't do anything to lift my spirits.

However, this new cover image is really exciting, and has turned me around to be excited about the book once again!

And if you look at the image closely, there's a little suprise, with possibly very big implications! We're discussing this on our sister site, Beyond Hogwarts!

Potter Theme Park rumors good news for the fate of Harry
[Posted Monday, 04/16/07 8:10 am] [Permalink]

This weekend, many news outlets have reported that unconfirmed rumors are looking good for a new theme-park in Orlando, Florida, themed entirely around the Harry Potter books. Besides giving a place to Harry Potter fans to have fun, I think this is really good news to fans for another really important reason.

Just last week I blogged here that I was getting a litte morose about the possible dark fate of Harry in just 100 days. But now, I'm starting to believe that Harry might not die in the Book 7 after all.

Several years ago, I wrote that it was understandable that a Harry Potter theme park or even a Harry Potter ride at an existing park had not yet been done, because while we all love the books, nobody knows how they end yet. After all, think about what would have happened if someone had created a cute and cuddly "Scabbers" ride before Prisoner of Azkaban came out. After we learned the truth about Scabbers, that ride would have been ruined.

But now, so close to the publication of the final book, we have rumors of a Harry Potter Theme Park. Do you think anyone would go to such a park if Harry Potter dies at the end of Book 7? I don't! So, if these rumors of the theme park are true, I can only take this to mean that Harry does not die at the end of the last book!

I don't have any inside knowledge on this, so don't get your hopes up. But, I think it's logical to assume that the park creators would not spend billions of dollars on something that could have an unhappy ending, and that they know something we don't.

So, I'm personally feeling pretty good about the upcoming ending of the story now!

100 days and counting
[Posted Thursday, 04/12/07 4:09 pm] [Permalink]

Today there are now only 100 days left until the world-wide release in English of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

I find myself getting more and more morose as the publication date nears. I am worried about the deaths we will have to endure, including the possible death of Harry. And I am depressed that when we all read the book after midnite on that night, that will be THE LAST TIME we will ever be able to read a Harry Potter book for the first time.

I'm sure many of you are feeling the same way, or will be getting there soon. But, there's no need to despair! In the same way that DumbledoreIsNotDead.com helped us through the emotional events at the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, that site's successor, Beyond Hogwarts, will continue to be a place us Harry Potter fans can meet to commiserate and gather strength from one another!

So, stay brave, and see you over at Beyond Hogwarts!

Harry Potter and the Beginning of the End: Chapter 2
[Posted Friday, 02/02/07 5:10 am] [Permalink]

And so it goes. All we have left now are the last few final milestones.

On December 22, J.K. Rowling surprised us all with the title of the final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Yesterday, the final Harry Potter book publication date was announced, July 21, 2007, a few days more than ten years after the original publication in the UK of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (June 26, 1997).

So, all we have left now, before we get the actual books on Saturday night, July 21, is release of the US and UK covers of the books, and then, probably as the answer to puzzles on J.K.'s official web site, perhaps a snippet or two from the book.

It's been a wild ten-year ride, although I must admit here publicly that I've only been aboard the ride for about five of those years. I can place the time because I remember, for Christmas one year, a boss gave me a gift certificate for Barnes & Noble. To use the gift certificate, I finally succumbed to the hype and bought all three Harry Potter books which were then available in paperback. I read them all in about a week! I immediately then went and caught the first Harry Potter movie which was still in the theatres at that time, but just barely. (I saw it twice, the last time making a special trip to see it on the last day of its run at my local theatre.) That was December, 2001.

And, as they say, the rest is Herbology. :-)
