Inspired by Harry Potter, Michigan artist turns the magic wand into an art form

Dave Raber and his wife and young son love the Harry Potter books and movies, so it wasn't a big surprise when Raber, a woodworker, made a couple of magic wands on the lathe in his spare time.

What was surprising was how Raber's casual wandmaking turned into a minor obsession, leading to many more wands that are much more elaborate and artfully colored than the original Harry Potter type wands.

Raber's one-of-a-kind wands are not simply Harry Potter toys (although they are durable enough to be used as such). Each one is a collectible showpiece to be enjoyed like any other art object.

And although you will probably be disappointed if your try to use one of these wands to open a lock, repair your eyeglasses, or duel to the death with You-Know-Who, they were indeed made with magic in mind, from the way they fit naturally in the hand to their "magical" shapes, textures and colors.

Raber's wands are available at www.artbyraber.etsy.com.
